Gurfa

‘Gurfa’ is an Arabic word that means how much water we can scoop up and hold in one hand. It struck me today the word is an excellent metaphor for a fulfilled life. A close friend died recently. Some time ago they told me the words they wanted carved on their gravestone was “No regrets. I had a wonderful time.” How much life did we/can we/hope to hold in our “hand” before we go? Enough to quench our thirst. Enough to be content. Enough to end up saying “No regrets.”
